SEO and SEM are abbreviations thrown around often and often thrown around incorrectly. So what are they and what is the difference between SEO and SEM?
SEO– Search Engine Optimization
SEO is an approach that uses organic methods to show up on SERPs (search engine results page). That means the work is done on your website. It can take time to see the results of SEO, but your strategy will build over time and leave lasting results.
SEM– Search Engine Marketing
SEM is a paid approach to showing up on SERPs. Think Google Ads, Gmail Ads, Bing Ads… With an SEM campaign, you will see results immediately and have more targeting control. However, as soon as you stop paying, you will stop seeing results.
So which one should you use? The answer is both.
SEO and SEM used together will drive more traffic and give you a competitive advantage.
